The Future of Adult Animation: Challenges of Language, Feasibility, and Audience

Animation aimed at adult audiences, with more complex themes, sharper humor, and bolder approaches, is a highly successful genre worldwide. However, Brazilian production has so far found few spaces to navigate in this realm, especially in independent or discontinuous projects, as in the case of the famous Super Drags. In recent times, however, some developments in the domestic market seem to be opening up opportunities for new adult animations, stemming from larger commercial investments, such as the first feature-length film of the genre to be released by Maurício de Sousa Produções, and with the arrival of the Adult Swim channel in Brazil. In this panel, creators and leaders at the forefront of these initiatives discuss the challenges of language, economic feasibility, and connection with the audience of the genre, in pursuit of consolidating the future of these eagerly anticipated new ventures for the national animation market.

Roger Keesse | Palestrante

Roger Keesse is a creator, writer, director, executive producer, and IP developer for kids, teens, and geek audiences. For over 10 years, he has led and developed projects with significant pop culture relevance, including TURMA DA MÔNICA JOVEM, winner of the 2020 Grand Prize for Best Animation Series at the Brazilian Film Awards, and NINJIN, the 7th most-watched show on HBO Max in November 2021. He serves as Head of Audiovisual Development at Mauricio de Sousa Produções and recently launched ASTRONAUTA (HBO), which he created, wrote, and directed. Currently, he is working on CHEF JACK 2, his feature film directorial debut.

Anderson Mahanski | Palestrante

Anderson Mahanski is a Director, Actor, 2D Animator, Concept Artist and Writer. He is co-creator of the series O SURREAL MUNDO DE ANY MALU (Youtube), ANY MALU SHOW (Cartoon Network / MAX) and SUPER DRAGS (Netflix). Mahanski has been working in Audiovisual for 24 years. With ANY MALU he gained more than 3 million subscribers on YouTube and won the awards for BEST ANIMATED SERIES at the RIO WEB FEST and SEOUL WEBFEST International Festivals. In Argentina he won the ANIMA LATINA AWARDS – BEST ANIMATED WEBSERIES award. And he represented Brazil in France, at the renowned ANNECY - MIFA FESTIVAL. With SUPER DRAGS he won the 19th Citizenship Award in Respect for LGBTQIA+ Diversity

Marina Filipe is Original Productions Sr. Manager for Warner Bros. Discovery, being responsible for the supervision of development and production of local original "Kids & Animation" content in the territory such as Jorel’s Brother, Any Malu Show and others. Her previous experiences include working as Development Producer for the BBC Studios and working as the Head of Production at Endemol Shine Brasil.

Ian SBF | Palestrante

Ian SBF started in the world of comics but soon moved to audiovisual with short films. In 2009, he discovered YouTube and launched the channel "Anões em Chamas", which led him to direct and script programs on Globo and Multishow. Shortly after, he co-created the channel "Porta dos Fundos". He also made several TV shows (FOX, COMEDY CENTRAL) and a movie, "Entre Abelhas", for cinema. Using his passion for comics, in 2017, he also created the YouTube channel "Society of Virtue", which later went to ADULT SWIM. Today, Ian is dedicated to TV and cinema, currently directing the general direction of the Portugal Show (MSW) and the general direction of the series "Cosme e Damião" (GLOBO).
