Black Rio Movement and the Funk Scene in the 1970s

This panel will discuss the cultural explosion in Rio de Janeiro during the 1980s, focusing on the legacy of the Black Rio Movement of the 1970s and its impact on the funk scene. We will cover the fusion of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, soul and disco that marked the era, in addition to highlighting the artists and events that shaped Rio culture during this period. Don Filó will talk about the influence of music, dance and style on the city's identity and its role in building a new cultural narrative.

Emílio Domingos | Moderador

Emílio Domingos is a filmmaker, anthropologist, researcher, screenwriter and producer. Documentarist. He directed the films: “Black Rio! Black Power!” and “Chic Show” (Globoplay), 2023. And the films: Favela é Moda; Fresh Cutz; Passinho Dance-Off and L.A.P.A. General Director of the series "Enigma da Energia Escura" with Emicida, where he directed the episode "Eu Falei Faraó". He wrote the series “Anitta: Made in Honório”, “Viajando com os Gil”, “Romário, o cara” for HBO. And the films: “Gilberto Gil Antologia Vol.1” and “Viva São João”. He is currently co-directing a Doc About Vini Jr with Andrucha Waddington (Netflix). Member of the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Dom Filó | Palestrante

Asfilófio de Oliveira Filho (@dom_filo), better known as Dom Filó, is an engineer, journalist, cultural producer and documentary filmmaker. He created Cultne, the largest digital collection of black culture in Latin America and is the CEO of Cultne TV, the first television 100% dedicated to black culture in Brazil. Mentor of the Black Rio Movement, he was the first black producer hired by the Warner Music record label in 1977, producing artists such as Banda Black Rio, Soul Grand Prix and Carlos Dafé. First black presenter on Brazilian TV. He is an Honorary Citizen of the City of Atlanta / USA, he was listed in the 100 PowerList 2021, as the Most Influential Black Personality in Lusofonia.
